K9 Walkies dogs
Is it time for walkies?

Dogs are called man's best friend for a reason. They are loyal, loving, never judgemental and always ready to bring a smile to your face. So we all should have one right? Well actually, before getting a dog there are a few things to consider.

Time

  • Do you have time and the commitment to look after a dog? Remember, a dog is for life not just for Christmas.

  • Money:

  • Can you afford to look after your dog? Dogs can be costly, especially if they have congenital issues. You may buy a dog not knowing that it has a congenital defect, some breeds can be susceptible to conditions caused by mating dogs which are too closely related. These conditions can become very costly if you have to take regular trips to the vets.

Lifestyle

  • How active you are and what level energy of dog you require. How much exercise your dog would need on a daily basis. How often are you out sociallising? Do you work full time/part time? How long your dog would be left for during the day?

Long hair/short hair

  • Long haired dogs are usually great for people with allergies but be prepared for getting them trimmed on a regular basis, usually every 6 weeks. You will also need to groom them every day to avoid matting, depending on the breed. Short haired dogs lose their hair all year when they live inside with you.

Pedigree/cross bred

  • Do you opt for a pedigree or cross bred? Should you adopt or choose from a rescue centre. Each breed usually has a rescue service with dogs waiting to be taken on. Did you know that the 18 month to 2 year age range is the most rehomed age range? This is because they are juvenile delinquents and a lot of people give up, this is such a shame because they grow out of it.

Space

  • Do you have room to accommodate a dog? Even small dogs need exercise and a place to roam free, run and play, so it’s important to have a garden for them to explore, do their business and keep stimulated.

Understanding

  • Do you understand how to look after your dog? Once you have decided what sort of dog you would like to own, research, research, research. Find out as much as you can about the breed and how this type of dog will fit into your lifestyle.

Finally, before you go out and buy that cute little puppy, consider older rescue dogs that are in need of some love and attention. Greyhound rescue always have dogs that need to be rehomed. You can find information about each breed’s characteristics and temperament at the Australian Kennel Club website. See below for more information.

Happy reading and always research until you can come up with the best decision for you, your family and your dog.

Thanks for reading
